Agriculture
In
1957, a vigorous rebirth of the sugar industry kindled by the Cuban
Revolution, made Pahokee and the Everglades Agriculture Area the sugar
capital of the United States. One teaspoon in every four consumed in
the United States is grown in South Central Florida and Pahokee is
among the principle centers of the sugar belt.
The country’s largest distributor of sweet corn is located near
Pahokee as well. Besides sweet corn, leafy vegetables, green beans,
radishes, broccoli and onions are grown and distributed to all parts
of the United States, Canada and Europe.
The sugar mills and farms provide employment for thousands of people
in and around Pahokee.
